Robert McClellan

History Professor at Northern in 1965

Robert McClellan became a history professor at Northern in 1965. Many considered him to be abrasive and too outspoken about controversial issues, but he was also widely regarded as an excellent teacher. One of President Harden’s last acts before resigning in 1967 was to fire McClellan for unclear reasons which probably centered on McClellan’s opposition to the University’s expansion into North Marquette which would require the forced removal of working class neighborhoods.

After a year of protests surrounding McClellan, the administration gave him his job back. McClellan continued to be involved in controversial university issues. He participated in faculty debates about Vietnam held during the moratoriums and he was an advisor to the Black Student Association which was responsible for two sit-ins at Northern. When six students were taken to court over the second sit-in, he helped them to find legal counsel and testified at the case.
